Joined BP Tangguh LNG
In 2005 PT Badak NGL launched a mutual agreement on termination program. Those who wants to leave the company were offered with a good amount of incentives. I wanted to participate in the program, but unfortunately my application to several oil and gas companies did not get any answer at the dead line given by the company.

Pada tahun 2005 PT Badak NGL meluncurkan kesepakatan bersama tentang program terminasi. Mereka yang ingin meninggalkan perusahaan ditawari sejumlah insentif. Saya ingin berpartisipasi dalam program ini, tetapi sayangnya lamaran saya ke beberapa perusahaan minyak dan gas tidak mendapatkan jawaban pada tenggat waktu yang diberikan oleh perusahaan.

In April 2006, to my surprise, I got the offer from BP Tangguh LNG for the position of an Operations Manager. Mr. Andrew Collins who interviewed me had agreed to hire me. First I was reluctant since it would mean I should given up a significant amount of pension mony, but when my friend Holand called me I finally agreed to join after BP Tangguh LNG agreed to give some sign-on bonus to help me moving without loosing too much.

Pada April 2006, saya terkejut, ketika mendapat tawaran dari BP Tangguh LNG untuk posisi Manajer Operasi. Mr. Andrew Collins yang mewawancarai saya telah setuju untuk mempekerjakan saya. Pertama saya enggan karena itu berarti saya harus merelakan sejumlah besar pensiun, tetapi ketika teman saya Holand menelpon saya, saya akhirnya setuju untuk bergabung setelah BP Tangguh LNG menyepakati untuk memberikan beberapa bonus masuk untuk membantu saya pindah tanpa kehilangan terlalu banyak.

I started my career at BP Tangguh LNG in August 2006. I met Irwan which was my counter part who already joined BP Tangguh LNG two months earlier. Together we are setting-up the operation organization and hiring the team from LNG plants in Indonesia as well as Middle East. We also hire people from petrochemical plants.

Saya memulai karir saya di BP Tangguh LNG pada Agustus 2006. Saya bertemu Irwan yang merupakan counterpart saya yang sudah bergabung dengan BP Tangguh LNG dua bulan sebelumnya. Bersama-sama kami menyiapkan organisasi operasi dan merekrut tim dari kilang LNG di Indonesia dan juga Timur Tengah. Kami juga mempekerjakan orang dari pabrik petrokimia.

Preparing for Initial Start-up
​BP Tangguh LNG is the third LNG plant in Indonesia located at Bintuni Bay, West Papua. The plant was at site preparation stage when I joined. I started almost from scratch in developing Operation team. It was a great challenge for me which forced me to put all my knowledge and my 22 years experience working at Badak LNG Plant. I have the privilege to set-up the operation team. The greatest challenge was getting LNG experience operators into the team. Working in rotational roster also increased the number of people we need in operation. Also how to ensure the operators would up hold to the same standard that BP is setting.

BP Tangguh LNG adalah kilang LNG ketiga di Indonesia yang berlokasi di Teluk Bintuni, Papua Barat. Pabrik berada pada tahap penyiapan lahan ketika saya bergabung. Saya mulai dari awal dalam mengembangkan tim Operasi. Itu adalah tantangan besar bagi saya yang memaksa saya untuk mengerahkan semua pengetahuan dan pengalaman 22 tahun saya bekerja di Kilang LNG Badak. Saya memiliki hak istimewa untuk mengatur tim operasi. Tantangan terbesar adalah memasukkan operator berpengalaman LNG ke dalam tim. Bekerja dalam daftar rotasi juga meningkatkan jumlah orang yang kita butuhkan dalam operasi. Termasuk bagaimana memastikan operator akan berkomitmen pada standar yang sama dengan yang ditetapkan BP.

​​​​To achieve this, we trained new operators for 2 years at Badak LNG plant. We also hired many Supervisors and Junior Supervisors from Badak LNG plant who wanted an early retirement and moved to Jakarta or Java to start a new life. Fortunately, PT Badak NGL policy allows their employee to get early retirement after they reached 46 years and minimum of 15 years of service. Other sources of experienced LNG operators are from Middle East. We also hired experienced operators from Petrochemicals. Of course we cannot fulfill all the needs for commissioning and start-up, therefore we also hired as temporary several retired personnel from Badak and Arun LNG plants.

Untuk mencapai hal ini, kami melatih operator baru selama 2 tahun di kilang LNG Badak. Kami juga mempekerjakan banyak Pengawas dan Pengawas Junior dari kilang LNG Badak yang menginginkan pensiun dini dan pindah ke Jakarta atau Jawa untuk memulai kehidupan baru. Untungnya, kebijakan PT Badak NGL memungkinkan karyawan mereka mendapatkan pensiun dini setelah mereka mencapai 46 tahun dan layanan minimum 15 tahun. Sumber lain dari operator LNG berpengalaman adalah dari Timur Tengah. Kami juga merekrut operator berpengalaman dari Petrokimia. Tentu saja kami tidak dapat memenuhi semua kebutuhan untuk commissioning dan memulai, oleh karena itu kami juga mempekerjakan beberapa pensiunan sementara dari kilang LNG Badak dan Arun.
Start-up Challenges
Many big challenges we were facing at Tangguh LNG during the initial start-up. The first one is during the hook up campaign of the two platforms at Bintuni Bay. During strength test of the pipeline we found leak underground. It took several months to locate the leak and repair it.

Banyak tantangan besar yang kami hadapi di Tangguh LNG selama permulaan start-up. Tantangan pertama adalah selama kampanye pemasangan kedua platform di Teluk Bintuni. Ketika uji kekuatan pipa kami menemukan kebocoran di bawah laut. Butuh beberapa bulan untuk menemukan kebocoran dan memperbaikinya.
After that we must do the first pigging of the pipeline from each of the two platforms. This requires a solid coordination and communication between team at the platform and the onshore team. This was done succesfully without significant issues. However when the first time we sent the gas to onshore, we must do it slowly to handle the amount of liquid accummulation at the onshore receiving facility. During this time that our Laboratory team flagged up that the produced water contain phenol which we cannot treat using existing facility. A large temporary facility must be installed to treat the phenol and allow the start-up to continue.

Setelah itu kami harus melakukan pigging pertama pipa feed gas dari masing-masing dua platform. Ini membutuhkan koordinasi dan komunikasi yang kuat antara tim di platform dan tim darat. Ini dilakukan dengan sukses tanpa masalah signifikan. Namun ketika pertama kali kami mengirim gas ke darat, kami harus melakukannya perlahan untuk menangani jumlah akumulasi cairan di fasilitas penerima darat. Selama melakukan ini, tim Laboratorium kami menyatakan bahwa air yang diproduksi mengandung fenol yang tidak dapat kami olah menggunakan fasilitas yang ada. Fasilitas sementara yang besar harus dipasang untuk mengolah fenol sehingga memungkinkan start-up untuk bisa dilanjutkan.

We also found some waxes at the Acid Gas Removal Unit. This was solved by adjusting the feed gas pressure and temperature to avoid wax precipitation until the amount of wax from the wells reduced.

Kami juga menemukan lilin di Unit Penyerap Gas Asam. Ini diselesaikan dengan menyesuaikan tekanan dan suhu gas umpan untuk menghindari pengendapan lilin sampai jumlah lilin dari sumur berkurang.

The next challenge is lack of ethane production. Temporarily we must import ethylene to substitute ethane as refrigeration component.

Tantangan selanjutnya adalah kurangnya produksi etana. Untuk sementara kita harus mengimpor etilena untuk menggantikan etana sebagai komponen pendingin.
